Xiuhtecuhtli

"Xiuhtecuhtli" 20"x14" watercolor
Here he is all finished, I have to say this is one of my favorite paintings. :0)
Here's a closer look at this wonderful young man, his eyes truly are tourquoise color (by the way Xiuhtecuhtli is the Aztec god of tourquoise)
I thought I had more photos of the portrait process but I must have been in the zone and painting fast! Sorry! To continue developing the flesh tones I added a few washes of the same colors and included some Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue and Sepia. For the shirt I used Aliz Crimson, Scarlet Lake, Permanent Rose, New Gamboge and Prussian Blue to tone the shadows down.
I started by drawing the portrait keeping in mind the fine ballance between drawing too much and not enough. . . . no shading because the graphite tends to dirty up the colors and I'm sure you've experienced how easy it is to dirty up the colors at one point or another! The colors I started out with are Alizarin Crimson, Permanent Rose and New Gamboge.

Hi, great portrait, I start the same way as you on the first layer,...but then we change. I newer use sepia, I find it hard to work with that color.

I asked you a long time ago for your FB friendship, because I thought your paintings was so beautiful, but had no response.

I love to see how you went from drawing to painting.
Is this your little boy?
Beautiful little boy and a beautiful painting the green in the back ground really popped him out.

By the way Pablo how do you pronounce his name?

YIPEE! You finished it! I have been waiting for that as I knew you would post once it was done! Well this fellow is totally wonderful!!! The fabric is so terrific and especially love the tapestry on the sleeve! And the hair! wow! I too love that lovely green with that perfect red of his jacket...I have always loved your portraits as they each tell a story.
So do alot of Aztec people have those turquoise eyes or is this uncommon?? Seems there was a North American tribe that had turquoise eyes that they were known for but not sure which tribe it was...it truely is a very unique feature as he is so intense so those eyes must be piercing!
Welcome to Artcolony Pablo! It is just terrific to have a very brave man on board!!!

OH, P.S.

Welcome to ArtColony, Pablo...we've been waiting for you to hop on here and say hello. You'll love it here...we promise.

I knew this was yours also. LOVE your work...one of my first glimpses of your work was a gorgeous white rose with that glass measuring cup...(I try not to look at FB too much, but, luckily for me...that's where I first saw your work and started following you around like a stalker...ha).

This portrait is beautiful...thanks for sharing your skintone palette...just beautiful. And again...welcome to our wonderful family.

Holy cow, I feel very welcomed and hugged. . thank you all for your kindness!

Solveig, I just friended you on Facebook, you know, that must have been when I wasn't friending anyone, I'm a little freaked out about having so many friends I don't actually know! :0) I'm somewhat of a loner. (sepia can be a little tricky)

Debbie, althought I liked the hair, it was a pain in the, uh, well, you know, to get it not to look like a wig!

Verena, he's like a son but he's not. . .the closest I can come to writing how to say it in Nahuatl is Sheew-Te-Koot-Lee

Janie Janie Janie. . . No, we Mexicans are mostly brown and round with dark eyes. ha ha ha Although, a the village south of where my Granny comes from the tribe had blue eyes.

Janet! I wouldn't want to go up against a viking even if I was an Aztec! ha ha

Hello Mzzz Mollie! Thank you! :0)

Ha! I am always so curious about eyes and how certain groups of people have specific traits in the eyes...I believe the Iroquois which had several tribes within it had some blue eyes and a friend of mine who is Black Foot I think it was has a wonderful black ring around the iris that makes those eyes just pop! My father looked like a little Greek fellow when in fact he was northern Norway...dark skin and pale blue eyes...his family was very dark and those wonderful eyes which my son inherited...so you see, I am very interested in where those eyes come from. I can tell we are going to enjoy having you here...you will be like a big brother to all these wild sisters! ha!!

Oh...and did I say WELCOME?! (Where are my manners). I'm afraid I've been a bit reclusive lately, (anguishing over the latest painting). But I'm here today and wish you a fulfilling journey with us here at the Colony!
